THIS MONTH’S QUESTION:

“I live in a colder climate, so my wardrobe mostly consists of long-legged items. Jeans, slacks, sweatpants, etc. I feel silly washing them EVERY time I come home. It can’t be good for their longevity. Should I Wash My Pants Every Time After I Wear Them? ” - Francisco

THE BUTLER RECOMMENDS…

Inspecting your clothes for foul odor and stains can help determine when to wash them. Still, this method isn't always practical and can overwash pants or not clean them as needed.

Here, I will help you answer a commonly asked question- 'Must I wash clothes each time I wear them?' I will also provide tips on caring for your pants to avoid losses.

Factors That Will Affect How Often You Need to Wash Pants

Various factors influence the amount of dirt your pants get and the cleaning regularity. For example, bright-colored pants quickly show dirt and require regular washing. Hence, you will likely need to wash such clothes or eliminate stains after every wear. On the other hand, you can wear dark-colored pants three to four times before cleaning them.

Another aspect that may affect the pant's cleaning regularity is the material. If you wear silk pants, clean them after each use to avoid discoloration. However, wear cotton, woolen, and synthetic pants about four to five times before washing.

How Often Should I Wash My Workout Pants?

Workout clothes have close contact with your skin and consist of absorbent materials. If you do not clean your pants after exercising, they will harbor bacteria and have a foul odor.

Wash your workout pants after each use to remove sweat and kill bacteria. Besides, turn them inside out to eliminate body oils accumulated on the inner part.

While it may be tempting to use excess detergent due to the foul odor on workout clothes, you should always stick to the recommended amount. This measure will protect the fabric and avoid detergent buildup.

Do I need to Wash My Office Pants After Every Wear?

Office clothes don't get dirty quickly, mainly if you have limited contact with greasy and dusty surfaces. Washing slacks and your pants more than needed will strain the fabric and cause premature wear.

Clean your synthetic office pants after wearing them four to five times. Besides, wash woolen work trousers after three to four uses based on the color and dirt visibility.

How Often Should I Wash My Jeans?

Jeans consist of denim or dungaree clothes which are stiff compared to other materials. Washing your jeans every day you wear them can break down the fiber causing the pants to lose shape. Besides, the material may fade faster and look unappealing.

Wash light-colored jeans after wearing them three times to maintain the quality. Further, clean dark-colored denim pants after 5-10 uses or when they have an odor.

Precautions to Take When Washing Pants

When washing each item of clothing, you must take some precautions to avoid damage and creasing. Some measures to observe when cleaning your pants are:

  • Use cold or warm water
  • Spot treat stains before washing
  • Set the gentle or delicate cycle when using a washing machine
  • Wash your clothes based on tag instructions
